About Technopolis

Mission

The mission of Technopolis is to bring science and technology closer to people Technopolis, the Flemish Science Centre, is a permanent platform for science and technology in Flanders, and grew out of Flanders Technology International vzw. All initiatives have the same goal in mind: to inform and raise awareness about the importance of science and technology and to increase enrolment, graduation and advancement in the exact and applied sciences. Technopolis therefore develops initiatives under the motto: 'I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand.'

Initiators

Technopolis is an initiative of the Flemish Government. The project received a total of € 16.2 million in funding. It is funded by the Flemish Government. In addition to operating the science centre in Mechelen, Technopolis is also responsible for coordinating the following projects:

Technopolis is present every year during the summer opening of the royal palace in Brussels with a thematic exhibition.

Who are we?

Technopolis pc

The investment company Technopolis was founded on 5 September 1997 in order to realise the Flemish Science Centre project. With the Flemish Science Centre in Mechelen and numerous ancillary activities, Technopolis has been giving a permanent form to the communication of science in Flanders since 26 February 2000. The Flemish Science Centre in Mechelen has become the central point for science communication in Flanders. The current Board of Directors of Technopolis consists of the following members:

F.T.I

Flanders Technology International is a non-profit association, founded in 1988 by the Flemish Governement. Its main objective was to organise the international technology trade fair Flanders Technology International. Since the beginning of the 90’s F.T.I has organised a broad range of activities for both the education system and the general public: science weeks, science festivals, books, television shows, a travelling science truck, educational material, science theatre and much more. These projects and activities have been assigned to F.T.I by the Flemish government. Since 26 February 2000 F.T.I has turned Technopolis, the Flemish Science Centre into the permanent symbol of science communication in Flanders. Since October 1999 F.T.I’s offices have been located at Technopolis. F.T.I has continued a number of its activities under the name of Technopolis.

Scientific Committee

F.T.I/Technopolis is advised by  a Scientific/strategic Committee, that consists of the following members:

  • Paul Lagasse – chairman of the Scientific Committee, board member of F.T.I. and Technopolis,  professor emeritus (Universiteit Gent).
  • Bart De Moor –  member General Assembly F.T.I, professor (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven).
  • Bram Vanderborght –  board member F.T.I vzw, professor and head of Department Robotis & Multibody Mechanics Research Group (Vrije Universiteit Brussel).
  • Koen Lenssens – board member F.T.I. and Technopolis and CEO of OPIKANOBA.
  • Jan Smessaert –   director Costumer Service Office 365 Microsoft EMEA. 
  • Patricia Verheyden –  Manager Stratgegic Initiatives, secretary of the committee.
